San Fermin is considered to be the first bishop of Pamplona. From a religious point of view, this celebration commemorated the martyrdom of St Fermin in the city of Amiens, and a relic of the Saint was brought from this city by Bishop Pedro de Artajona in During this period the fiestas held in honour of the Saint were frugal and almost entirely religious: the Vespers, the Procession, the Octava eighth mass and the so-called “lunch for the poor” paid for by the city council.
The Fiesta was also related to cattle fairs and bullfights, which are documented from the 14th century onwards. However, at first the religious festival and the bullfighting events took place at different times of the year.

A running of the bulls Spanish : encierro , from the verb encerrar , ‘to corral, to enclose’; Occitan : abrivado , literally ‘haste, momentum’; Catalan : correbous , ‘run-bulls’ is an event that involves running in front of a small group of cattle, typically six but sometimes ten or more, that have been let loose on a course of a sectioned-off subset of a town’s streets, usually as part of a summertime festival.
Particular breeds of cattle may be favored, such as the toro bravo in Spain, also often used in post-run bullfighting , and Camargue cattle in Occitan France, which are not fought. Bulls non-castrated male cattle are typically used in such events. The most famous bull-run is the encierro held in Pamplona during the nine-day festival of Sanfermines in honour of Saint Fermin.
More traditional summer bull-runs are held in other places such as towns and villages across Spain and Portugal , in some cities in Mexico , and in the Occitan Camargue region of southern France. Bull-running was formerly also practiced in rural England, most famously at Stamford until The origin of this event comes from the need to transport the bulls from the fields outside the city, where they were bred, to the bullring , where they would be killed in the evening.

My gf and I will attend Fiesta de San Fermin after we get married in the southern part of Spain next year. We can only have 2 days to spend in this very best festival. Two days is never enough, but four can be exhausting for some people. The best days for the fiesta, as already mentioned, are after the opening weekend, when there are a few less people, but the pace remains the same. Personally, the 9th through the 14th are always the nicest for us, a little less hectic and more traditional.
